Elizabeth is the fourth Elizabeth in her family. Her grandmother, her mother and cousin were all named Elizabeth. All the Elizabeths were polished, refined and glamorous ladies. The fourth Elizabeth liked to be called Beth. Beth rode bicycles, she believed that marriage wasn't the end all to be all and she dreamed of going to New York.The other Elizabeths scolded her for not being like them. Beth knew who she is and knew her time to be free is coming soon.She show them that a Beth is just as good as an Elizabeth

She still believed in love. Though at times her heart felt like snow had covered it. She still had girlish dreams of love now tempered with her experiences as a grown woman. Someday, what she long for would come. She smiled to herself. It might even come today as she looked out the window to the morning sun.

Romantic Vignette 16 #:Yumiko

Yumiko had enjoyed her marriage to Rokuro. He was everything that every girl would had wished for: handsome, wealthy, charming. Something stirred inside her when she woke in the mornings now. In the past few month she felt something is wrong inside her soul. Her mother and her in laws teased that it was time for her to become a mother.

Then a new teacher had come to the village, he was rumored to have been a disowned son of a wealth landowner in the western province. Jiro. She had first seen him when she had walked to see her mother. He was all legs, wild ebony hair flowing in the breeze and a crooked smile. When he looked at her, Yumiko's heart beat. Those eyes she had never seen eyes so dark and intense before.

As if on unspoken agreement, Thursdays would find them on the same path after Yumiko's visit her with her mother and the ending of Jiro's school day. They would smile, walk together and talk of books and places they both wish to visit.

Yumiko told herself that it was a harmless friendship. She knew better. She locked that away in her heart for now and looked forward to Thursdays with Jiro....

Romantic Vignette # 15: Merman

I walked along the shore nursing my broken heart when I found him. At first, I thought it was joke being played on me. It was me and him under a misty gray Friday sky. He was bleeding on his torso. What strength I had, I dragged him back to the cottage. I ran the bath, cleaned his wound and let him soak. It has been two days. 48 hours. Who I was then and now are different because of him. Kai.


Now, I know the world is more than what we are taught. There is a magical beauty that lies within our reality. Finally, I have found my way to it. To Kai. To myself.

Romantic Vignette #14: Gloves

I have fond memories of my Easter outfits that my mom had me dressed in. One of my favorite accessories were my white gloves. In the past two years, I have been on the hunt for beautiful lace white gloves to wear. I haven't found the right gloves yet, I know I will eventually. Here is a throwback when Gloves were part of every day life. Enjoy.

Romantic Vignette #13: Butterfly girl

Charlie could feel a warm feeling in her belly before they came. She loved her friends, at times she feel different from them. She knew it has to do with the butterflies. Then one day, she went to her local park. Charlie got turned around and the sky began to look dark. She got scared. Soon,the butterflies came. Pretty small ones in pink, white and yellow dancing around Charlie. As they fluttered around her, Charlie followed them back to the path she knew;and,was able to get home in time before the storm. Charlie finally accepted she is different and liked it. No other girl had butterflies as good friends.

Romantic Vignette #13: Night and Day

It is a starry night. You are alone on a balcony looking up at the sky. This song comes on: Night and Day sung by Maxine Sullivan. You think of that one special person who fills your heart with joy. You wish the person was here now. You feel a touch on your arm. You turn around and the person is there. How? Why? Doesn't matter, all that matters is now you dance in their arms.

Romantic Vignette # 12: Rainy day beauty

Belle loved the rain since as long as she could remember. When others would don dark coats and rain boots, she walk out in colors of cream, celadon, seafoam, vanilla. Her cloak barely touching the ground and her boots buffed to glow in the foggy rain days. She took comfort in the rain as a long lost friend. Belle knew the beauty of a rainy day remained the pleasure of few people. She felt anyone can love the sunshine, it takes a special person to love the rain.

Romantic Vignette #11: Inez

Inez had lived all her life saying yes to every request and demand. That is how she was raised. Inez had turned an age where most women were married by now. She had a clear vision of what the years would be if she continued to live this way. Inez went to take the pictures her grandmother and mother had demanded to today. Tomorrow, everything is going to change! She still had the money gifted to her by Auntie Gladys before she passed. She had her teaching certificate unused yet still good. Tomorrow, Inez is going to say yes to herself. How glorious tomorrow is to be Inez dreamily and strongly thought to herself.

Romantic Vignette #10: Tempie

Tempie Wilson could hear the audience. She had heard La Baker, herself, is here tonight to see her sing. No, they hadn't come for shy Tempie she reminded herself. They had come to see Tiger Lily, the newest black sensation, in Berlin.  She smiled as she finished putting on her berry lipstick. Tiger Lily would give them a show they never forget.

Romantic Vignette #9 : Virgie

Why couldn't I be named Belle or a Catherine instead of Virgie she thought. Plain old Virgie with the books. Virgie had a plan. When she turn 17 in six months and graduate from high school, she wouldn't go up to Chicago like her mother wanted her to. She wasn't going to waste away in a factory. No, she run away to New York or even better, Paris. She call herself Catherine, write and truly be free.

Romantic Vignette #8: Florence

How could things change in a week? mused Florence. Five days ago, she had been practically shunned by her family for breaking off the engagement with Miles. Rich influential Miles of the Scott family. Miles had a dark side. She only confided in Granny Delano what he had tried to do her. When Granny had called her down to Clarkstown, her parents had no choice to obey. Last night, at the party Granny had thrown, Florence had found him. Richard. Handsome and kind. Those blue eyes that reminded of her sunshine days. He was going to call on her this afternoon. Let the day never end....

Philomena had high hopes for her life. She is the first one in her family to go to college. She's proud to go to Howard University in the fall. What would happen to Henry when she left? I had dreamed of this place many times before. Then I heard his voice beyond the gate. A voice from a dream now all too real. I picked up the hem of my silver flowing skirt and walked toward the entrance. My heart racing with delight and excitement...
