I am dedicating Fridays, the day of Venus to love this month.To kick off this Friday Love Day post I'm going to wade into an decades old romantic debate: Love Affair or Affair to Remember. Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne vs. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr
I adore Love Affair (1939) starring Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne. They starred in three movies together and I they are wonderful on screen together. I wrote about their special chemistry together here. To be fair to Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, they also starred in three movies together,too.
Finally, I got to see 1957's Affair To Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Both versions were directed and co-written by Leo McCarey. I read online that originally McCarey wrote the male lead with Cary Grant in mind. And wanted Cary and Irene do do it together. (Irene Dunne and Cary Grant also starred in three movies together.) The movie is beautiful to look at in all that glorious color. There are expanded scenes in this version especially with their unlucky previous mates.
The story is the same though the male names was changed. Michel Marney/Nickie Ferrante, international playboy is set to marry a rich American heriess. On the translatic voyage he meets Terry Mckay, an American use to the good life ,aka Pink Champagne, with her rich boyfriend. Unexpectedly, the two fall in love. One of my favorite moments is when Terry meets Michel/Nickie's grandmother. In both versions, that scene is sweet. As they arrive in NY, they decide to meet in six months at the Empire State Building while they get free of their respective past loves and learn to make money on their own. Now, I won't spoil it by telling you what happened. Of course, Affair to Remember is heavily referenced in Sleepless in Seattle.
For me, I prefer Irene Dunne's Terry McKay than Deborah Kerr's take on the role. Irene gives a bit sparkle and winsomeness that I adore. And Irene Dunne really sang her parts, She has a beautiful voice. Deborah's Terry is more refined. Deborah Kerr's strength is in potraying regal and elegant ladies. She still does a fine job as Terry. The real match up is Charles Boyer vs. Cary Grant. They both do well. Cary Grant reported that he preferred Charles Boyer's version better than his own. I have to agree. I don't think the expanded parts help the 1957 movie. There are songs in the first ones about wishing that Irene Dunne sang that echoed the love story better than the songs used in the 1957 version. As much as I like suave Cary Grant, I do have a tender penchant for my dreamy Charles Boyer.
If I had saw Affair to Remember first, perhaps I feel more loyal to it than Love Affair. The truth is this all a personal preference. If you have never seen either versions. I see Love Affair first then Affair to Remember. So you can compare with yourself. I'm not forgetting the most recent version. Yes, done in 1994 starring Annette Benning and Warren Beatty. I still have yet to see it. When I do, I will report back.

I have been trying to post since yesterday.
Blogger has been acting up. Ugh.
The Heatwave that has been consuming most
of the country is finally here. Today it's
going to reach 105 degree.Since Wednesday,
I've stayed in during the daytime. Being
pregnant, the heat gets to me in a way that
it never has.
What to do when the daystar gets too hot?
I have been watching a lot more movies.
I found a real gem about a week ago called
History is Made at Night (1937).
It stars one of my faves, Charles Boyer and
Jean Arthur. Charles Boyer is Paul Dummond.
One night, he saves Irene (Jean Arthur) from
a compromising position orchestrated by
her insanely possessive husband (played with fervor
by Colin Clive of Frankenstein fame.) Paul
and Irene share a magical night together.
What happens next, well I can't tell you.
I want you to see it for yourself.
I can share History is Made at Night is
a great blend of romance, comedy and
drama.

be Dreamy Thursday. This week's installment is on the
screen couple of Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne.
One of my very first posts here was about the movie Love Affair (1939).
Charles is the world famous playboy Michel Marnet
and Irene is Terry McKay. They meet and fall in love
on a cruise despite being attached to other people. And
then they plan to meet up again at the Empire State Building
in Six months. What happens next? You may already know
since Love Affair has been remade twice into
An Affair to Remember (1957), Love Affair (1994) and of course
influencing Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
Love Affair is one of my favorite movies. I adore Charles and Irene
together. To me, they sparkled on screen. About three months
ago, getting rid of my cable. I was searching for ways to
watch classic movies online. Lo, and behold, on You Tube I found
out Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne made two other movies!!!
It was like having an Early Christmas Present.
They reteamed to play in the a truly weepy romantic drama When Tomorrow Comes(1939).
Charles is pianist Philip Changal and meets Irene Dunne
who plays Helen Lawrence, a singer turn waitress. Helen
is heading a strike for waitresses at the restaurant she
works at. She serves him lunch and catches his eye. Helen
wants no part of Philip, especially since she mistakenly thinks he
works for management at the restaurant. Phillip won't give up;
Helen falls for Philip's suave charms. Can this couple last?
For my more romantic souls, you may want to have a tissue or two on hand.
Finally, Charles and Irene finished their trilogy
in the delightfulTogether Again (1944). Irene Dunne is Anne Crandal
,a mayor of a small town. They call her Lady Mayor.
She took over the office after the death of her husband
who was the original mayor. When the statue of her husband
is hit by lightening. Her stepdaughter demands the statue
be rebuilt. Anne had to go NYC to interview a new
sculptor. Guess who the sculptor is?
Of course, it's Charles Boyer as George Corday. Once again,
Charles and Irene do a merry chase of love.

All three films have different plots and themes.
Charles and Irene make it all seem so effortless and real on
screen. They are spectacularly dreamy together.

It is my favorite day of the week.
I have to confess I was quite stumped
about what to write.
Then I came across this and well
I knew I had to share.

All This and Heaven Too (1940)
starring Bette Davis and Charles Boyer.
I do adore his accent.. and those
eyes. Quite dreamy to me.
Bette Davis is one of my personal
favorite actors.
Bette plays Henriette ,who in flasbacks,
tells her of her love for the handsome
and married Duc de Praslin when working
as his Governess. This is for my romantics
out there. Or if you love Bette and Charles.
My love for old films goes back to weekends with my mom when I was little. When we spend a whole day watching old movies. She tell me all the names of the stars. The share what other movies they were in and the memories she had of watching them as a girl. One of the best things about cable is Turner Classic movies aka TCM. I get to watch old favorites and find new ones to enjoy.
On Sunday, I watched Love Affair (1939) starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. Now I heard about this film because it was remade in the 50's as an Affair To Remember with Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr, which was referenced heavily in Sleepless in Seattle. Then a nineties version with the original title with Annette Benning & Warren Beatty. I have to see the these other two versions, though I have a feeling it won't equal up to the original for me.
With that all said, if you love old romantic movies you have to see this. It is a bit of a tearjerker. Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer sparkle on screen together. Irene Dunne is quick witted and vibrant. And Charles Boyer is all playful and debonair. I'm not really into bad boys but his oh so bad boy charm had me from the beginning of the movie. It's a lovely film. Funny and warm. All I could say is after seeing the movie I want Pink champagne. You won't understand that until you watch the movie. Then you will be ordering that too.
Seriously, you want to forget the world for ninety minutes. Watch Love Affair from 1939.
